For you, the month of February might be all about trying to find the perfect gift or plan the perfect date for your significant other. For your child, however, it’s something else entirely; something arguably even more important. February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. That means it’s a perfect opportunity to learn about how to implement good dental hygiene habits into your child’s life. Here are a few easy ways you can do that.
Set a Good Example
There are few things kids love more than copying what Mommy and Daddy do. You can use this to your advantage when trying to get your little one to clean their pearly whites. Brush and floss at the same time every evening. Make a show of enjoying the feeling of having clean teeth. Your child will want to partake in the habit so they can be just like you.
Let Them Pick Out a Toothbrush
The next time you take your child to the local grocery store or pharmacy, make a detour through the dental section. Let them select a toothbrush that has their favorite color or cartoon character on it. Maybe guide them toward one that sings for the recommended two minutes of brushing time. In addition, allow them to pick out their favorite flavor of toothpaste and some flavored floss. Kids are much more likely to look forward to cleaning their teeth if they had a say in the buying process.
Reward Their Progress
While you’re at the store, buy a chart or calendar to hang on the bathroom wall, as well as a set of stickers. For every day that your child remembers to brush and floss on their own, place a sticker on the chart. When the entire chart or calendar page is covered in stickers, reward your child. Maybe let them pick the next movie you go out to see together, or take them for a day at the park.
Schedule a Dental Appointment
Ideally, your son or daughter should see their children’s dentist twice a year. At these visits, the dentist will examine your child’s mouth for early signs of cavities and get them treated right away. The dental hygienist will also give your child’s pearly whites a professional cleaning to help them shine. The best part is, if you schedule a checkup now, your child will be due for another one in August. Their smile will shine nice and bright just in time for yearbook picture day!
Although these tips are great ways to celebrate Children’s Dental Health Month, keep in mind that they can be applied all year round to ensure your child’s smile is as healthy as can be.
